My Favorite Fitness Apps

I have two fitness apps on my smartphone I use everyday: Sworkit and Nexercise. Sworkit was actually developed by the company that made Nexercise, but I like Sworkit for its own benefits. Its my favorite of the two, so I'll go over it first.

Sworkit

Sworkit is an app that provides an array of workouts for its users to perform. They have three main categories of workouts: Strength & Cardio, Yoga & Stretching, and Custom Workouts. Within each category, they have different types of workouts; for example, the Strength & Cardio section has workouts dedicated to separate muscle groups along with a boot camp and cardio sessions.

I really like the interface of Sworkit, which you can see below.

The middle screen provides an example of what you can expect to see when doing a workout. The app will count down for the time you set - 30 seconds here - while a video below the exercise name shows you how to properly execute the form. Thanks to this capability, Sworkit can be used by exercise newbies and pros alike.

My favorite exercise on Sworkit is the Standing Only workout under Yoga & Stretching. This exercise set enables you to do a stretching workout without ever having to get on the ground. I love to do this in 5 minute increments during the workday to get some movement into my daily schedule without having to change into an exercise outfit every time.

Overall, Sworkit is a great app for watching great workout routines on the go. I used the Pro version, which has advanced capabilities, so if you are interested in the free one, you may not get the full use out of the app. However, in either case it's worth giving it a try.

Nexercise

As mentioned earlier, Nexercise is the parent app of Sworkit. It's a fitness tracker with some pretty cool capabilities under three sections as pictured in this screenshot:

  • Log/Track: This is the area where you log your workout. The workout log lets you select from a range of activities, including specialized fitness programs. Once you select your workout, you can set the time the activity took place and its duration. Optionally, you can add a distance. In addition to logging workouts, you can also log your weight to keep track of it over time.
  • Earn: My favorite component of Nexercise is the rewards program. Each workout you do will help you gain experience to level up in the app. In addition to that, you can earn something called mPOINTS that can be redeemed for gift cards, apparel, and more. It's a great way to get motivated to work out! You get points for each activity logged along with attaining different achievements, such as leveling up in the app.
  • Connect: Nexercise has a social component. You can add friends and measure your fitness against them on a leaderboard. You can also arrange "FlashFit Mobs", where you and your friends work out at the same time for the same duration to get bonus points. The app also contains a Chatter board where you can talk with other Nexercise users.

Rewards

I know I already mentioned rewards, but they're my favorite part, so I could resist going over them again! The above image displays a section of rewards you can receive. There are a variety of rewards you can redeem; for example, you can purchase a low-value gift card with your mPOINTS or enter a sweepstakes to win a higher-value one. You can also choose to donate your mPOINTS to a range of worthwhile charities.

Not only do you get mPOINTS for tracking your workouts with Nexercise, but you also earn mPOINTS by completing workouts in Sworkit Pro! So far, I've gotten a couple of Amazon gift cards with my earnings. It takes a while to save up for something big, but if you're going to workout anyway, why not get some rewards with it too?

So, there you have it: my favorite fitness apps, which happen to be developed by the same company. You can find out more about them, including where to download them, at their respective websites. The apps are available for iOS and Android systems.
